Our approach to child safety

Hoop exists to help teenagers and young adults meet new friends online in a positive and safe environment. Safety is at the core of how we design the platform. Because many people using Hoop are minors, we take extra steps to protect them. This includes strict age separation, advanced moderation tools, and clear reporting options. Adults and minors do not interact on Hoop. Harmful behaviour is removed quickly, and users can reach us directly if something feels unsafe.

This page explains how we keep Hoop safe, how we manage risk, and what we expect from everyone using the app.

Community guidelines (please read first)

Our Community Guidelines contain the complete list of rules that all users must follow. They outline behaviour expectations, safety requirements, prohibited content, and the actions we take when guidelines are broken.

They include detailed rules about:

We encourage all users — especially minors and parents — to review them:

1. Child Safety & CSAE Standards

Hoop upholds strict child safety protections and follows all applicable child protection laws and industry best practices.

Clear prohibition of CSAE

Hoop strictly prohibits Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation.

This includes:

Users who violate these rules are permanently banned and reported to law enforcement, including the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

Reporting CSAE or harmful behaviour

Hoop provides in-app tools that allow users to report:

Trained moderators review these reports. CSAE concerns are handled with the highest priority.

Compliance commitment

Hoop complies with child protection laws, enforces age separation, maintains reporting tools for CSAM and harmful behaviour, and escalates credible CSAE reports to law enforcement.

2. Minimum age and account requirement

Minimum age

Users must be at least 13 years old to use Hoop.

We ask users to confirm their date of birth during sign-up to help prevent mistakes or incorrect age selection.

We review all new profiles, and if an account appears to belong to someone under 13, or is reported as underage, we remove it.

Date of birth cannot be changed

Once entered, a user's date of birth cannot be changed. Accounts created with false age information are removed.

Support for parents and guardians

Parents can reach us at:

child-safety@hoop-app.net

We also provide a Parent's Guide with more information.

3. How we protect minors

Age separation

Hoop separates adults (18+) and teenagers (13–17). They do not see each other's profiles or interact. This filter is automatic and cannot be changed.

No real-time location

Hoop does not use or request real-time location. Users manually choose their country during sign-up, and that is the only location information we use. Cities, regions and precise locations are never collected or shown.

Progressive age separation for teens

We also limit how teenagers see each other. This keeps interactions closer in age and reduces risk for younger teens.

The ranges work like this:

Private profiles for minors

When a teenager signs up, their profile is private by default. They must choose to make their profile public within their own age group. They can switch their profile back to private at any time in settings.

Chat restrictions for minors

Minors do not have access to chat on Hoop. Chat is only available to users who are 18 or older.

Content controls

We use several layers of protection to prevent minors from being exposed to unsafe or inappropriate content. These include:

This reduces risk and prevents minors from being exposed to adult or unsafe material.

4. Safe profile and content rules

Users can upload up to three profile photos.

We do not allow:

If automated tools miss something, users can report it. All reports are reviewed within 48 hours. Serious violations result in account removal.

5. Prohibited behaviours

Hoop is a place to make friends. Behaviour that harms or targets others is not allowed.

Harassment and bullying

Sexual harassment

Sexual harassment is not allowed on Hoop. This includes:

Chat is only available to adults aged 18 or older. Minors cannot send or receive messages.

Predatory or exploitative behaviour

Dangerous content

6. Reporting, blocking and moderation

Reports can be submitted from profile photos and profile menus.
